NYU Stern Globalization Explorer

Welcome to the Globalization Explorer, the online data visualization and analysis home of NYU Stern’s DHL Initiative on Globalization. We aim to support informed decision-making about globalization in business and public policy by providing the academic world’s most comprehensive set of content on the flows that connect countries.
Globalization looks different depending on where you are in the world and what business or policy area you are analyzing. This tool remaps the world by sizing and coloring countries according to thousands of indicators of international activity. It can help debunk common myths and inform strategic thinking.

Distance is about more than just miles or kilometers. This tool applies Pankaj Ghemawat’s CAGE Distance Framework to analyze how cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic distances shape international activity. Decision-makers can use it to examine patterns and identify potential growth opportunities.

About Us

The Globalization Explorer is a project of the DHL Initiative on Globalization at the NYU Stern Center for the Future of Management. Please follow these links to learn about our team, as well as our publications, and media coverage about our research. For our annual analyses of how globalization is trending and how levels of globalization compare across countries and regions, please refer to the DHL Global Connectedness Index report series, which measures globalization based on the depth and breadth of countries’ international trade, capital, information, and people flows.

Acknowledgements

The Globalization Explorer’s Maps and CAGE Comparator™ features were presented originally on NYU Stern Professor Pankaj Ghemawat’s personal website, and we thank Professor Ghemawat for supporting our effort to continue developing these tools here. We would also like to thank Janak Porwal of Digiperfect Technologies and Jonathan Wyss of Beehive Mapping for their contributions to this website.
